Shamble golf: rules and scoring

A shamble is a golf format in which everyone tees off, the team chooses one drive, and each player then plays their own ball until it is holed. The organizer decides whether one, two, or more individual scores count toward the team's result on each hole.

Rules to publish before the first tee

Give every team the same written instructions before play. Specify team size, tees, the number of individual scores that count, whether results are gross or net, and any minimum-drive requirement. A shamble is an organizer-defined variation, so players should never have to infer the rules from the event name alone. If your terms differ from a previous outing, call out the change at the briefing.

All players hit a tee shot and the group selects one drive. Mark that position, apply the placement conditions in the event rules, and have every golfer play a separate ball from there. After that second shot, golfers follow their own balls through the hole. They do not keep choosing the best approach or putt, because that would turn the hole into a scramble.

How shamble scoring works

The selected drive counts as stroke one for each player. Every golfer adds their own strokes from the selected position, including applicable penalties under the published event conditions. Keep each player's hole score identifiable before calculating the team number. In a one-best-score shamble, take the lowest qualifying individual score on each hole; in a two-best-score event, add the lowest two instead.

For net competition, publish the allowance and how strokes are allocated before entries open. Do not assume every handicap method or simulator setting is interchangeable. Ask the course or competition committee to approve the method, and retain both the gross figures and the calculation used for the result. That record makes a score question answerable after the round.

Worked example: one drive, four finishes

On a par-4, four players select Dana's drive. From that spot, Alex takes three more strokes, Blair takes four, Casey takes five, and Dana takes three. Their gross hole scores are 4, 5, 6, and 4 because the shared drive counts once for everyone. A one-best-score team records 4; a two-best-score team records 4 + 4 = 8. These are gross examples with no handicap deduction.

Common variations and the decisions they create

Two-person and four-person shambles use the same tee-shot principle but create different chances to find a good drive. Requiring a minimum number of drives from every player changes the team's choices late in the round. Counting two scores instead of one gives more players a stake in finishing the hole. Set these conditions before play and keep a separate drive tally when your rules require one.

A shotgun start can be paired with a shamble, but it only changes where and when groups begin. It does not change how scores are counted. For a mixed-ability field, explain when a player may pick up and what score should be recorded under your local event conditions. Avoid a blanket instruction to pick up if that player's score might still be needed.

Running this format in FairwayOS

FairwayOS can handle the event's registration, player groups, and individual score entry. It does not provide a dedicated shamble mode or a verified automatic shamble team calculation. Keep the shamble team calculation with the committee and confirm your score-entry plan before accepting registrations. If you need an automated shared team card, the supported scramble workflow is a different format and requires different rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is a shamble the same as a scramble?

No. A shamble shares the selected tee shot only. A scramble repeats the best-shot selection after each stroke until the team holes out.

Does the selected drive count for everyone?

Yes. It is the first stroke of each player's hole score, followed by the strokes that player takes from the selected position.

How many scores count?

The organizer decides. One best score and two best scores are common choices, and the event conditions must state which applies.

Can a shamble use handicaps?

It can use a published net method approved for the event. Confirm the allowance with the committee rather than assuming a standard deduction.

Does FairwayOS calculate shamble team totals?

A dedicated automatic shamble calculation is not available in the verified workflow. The organizer must keep that calculation and check the score-entry plan.
